When celebrity style inspirations are listed, they tend to be the younger woman, such as Rita Ora or Ariana Grande. However, for UK fashion retailer Bonmarche, who focuses mainly on women over 45, it was important to find out which celebrity women inspired their target demographic. They have recently completed a study that showed Jennifer Anniston, Joanna Lumley, Meryl Streep, and Helen Mirren were all firm favorites.
There are two well-known facts of life: women like to look their very best, and they often look towards celebrities to define their own sense of style. However, generally speaking, when research aims to find out which celebrities most inspire the woman of today, it looks mainly at the younger woman. UK fashion retailer Bonmarche, however, targets women over 45 in particular. Hence, they decided to complete their own study in celebrity fashion inspirations.
To complete the study, Bonmarche spoke to women from all over the United Kingdom, in an effort to determine whether there were differences between geographical locations. They divided respondents further into age categories, being those aged between 45 and 54, aged between 55 and 64, and aged 65 and over. This helped them to determine whether different women have different inspirations.
The first thing they uncovered was that geographical location did not play a significant role in style inspirations for women until they hit the category of 65 and over. It was also only in this age category that the order for the top four women changed, rather than just the percentage of votes they received.
For women aged 45 to 54, the top 10 celebrity style icons were revealed to be:
- Helen Mirren, receiving 19.2% of the votes.
- Jennifer Anniston, receiving 16.3% of the votes.
- Meryl Streep, receiving 14.5% of the votes.
- Joanna Lumley, receiving 13.5% of the votes.
- Nicole Kidman, receiving 10.3% of the votes.
- Elle McPherson, receiving 10% of the votes.
- Julie Walters, receiving 8.1% of the votes.
- Jane McDonald, receiving 5.9% of the votes.
- Salma Hayek, receiving 5.4% of the votes.
- Ruth Langsford, receiving 4.8% of the votes.
In the next age category, the 55 to 64 year old women, the top four remained unchanged, as did their order. However, Helen Mirren did receive a larger proportion of the votes (20%), whereas Jennifer Anniston dropped slightly (15.5% of the votes). In the next and final category, however, things changed more dramatically.
Firstly, they found that for women in England, Wales, and Scotland, the order of the top four changed. Mainly, Jennifer Anniston was relegated to fourth position and Helen Mirren received 28.4% of the votes. Meryl Streep and Joanna Lumley took up second and third place respectively. In Scotland, meanwhile, choices were made somewhat differently. Mainly, with 27.8% of the votes, Jennifer Anniston took up first position. Helen Mirren dropped to second, followed by Meryl Streep and Joanna Lumley.
Bonmarche was also curious to see what it was about these women that inspired their customers. Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, and Joanna Lumley were all loved for their sophistication, but also their gracefulness, timeless beauty, and fearless attitude. Jennifer Anniston, meanwhile, was loved for her girl-next-door looks and particularly her tan and hair, as well as her commitment to living a healthy lifestyle.
“As women grow older, their tastes and influences change, but one thing remains constant: a desire to look great,” says the online marketing manager for Bonmarche.
Clearly, once women reach the age of 45 and over, they care not just about outward beauty, but also about what is on the inside.
