Things Everyone Should Know About Disability

Disability is a really serious problem. Nobody wants to be disabled but this tends to happen. Sometimes it is because of the actions of someone else but in most cases this is just because of aging. Obviously, we also have the cases in which people are simply born with disabilities. No matter the case, disability law does exist and did manage to help a lot in the past 20 years. The problem is that most people do not know that much about disabilities, rights, obligations and so on. Even if you are not disabled or you do not know someone that is some things should be common knowledge. This is what we will discuss in the following paragraphs.

Education Stands Out As A Factor

An older person that has a high school diploma will be twice as probable to have disability than a person that has at least a Bachelor’s degree. Many disabilities happen because of something that could have been avoided if people were informed about the dangers of what they do.

The Employment Problem

Not all the disabilities lead to problems working. If the disabled person can work, thing do not stop though. Disabled individuals are faced with more stress and various associated negative health effects. At the same time, statistics show that they will earn around 30% less than those that are not disabled on the same jobs.

Disabled People And Police

This is definitely a worrying trend. Unfortunately, around 50% of the people killed by police every single year are disabled. In many crisis situations we see police showing up first. The officers can end up responding in a really bad way, as it was the case with Arnaldo Eluid Rios Soto and Charles Kinsey. This incident led the disabled person more traumatized, which is definitely not what should have happened. We also saw Robert Ethan Saylor’s death, a dreadful incident in which the police did not understand that the victim suffered from Down syndrome.

Police education about disabilities and the way in which officers act is something that should only be seen as a real concern. Unfortunately, we are far from that.

There Are More Disabled People Living In The World Than You Think

There is this common perception that a disabled person is only the one that cannot move or think. That is definitely not the case. Disabilities can be present and the outside person can think that nothing like this is present. Statistics show that 1 in 5 US civilians that are not currently institutionalized are disabled. When people are older the possibilities of seeing disabilities are higher.

Disability Facilities Are Still Needed

Even if we did come a long way from a few years ago, we still need to invest a lot in accommodations for disabled individuals. The truth is that we do not have enough options available and the infrastructure in most cities is really bad. You want to be sure that proper accommodations are offered for those that are disabled. Do not just think that everything is fine.
