  1. What type of Dentist do you need?

Dentistry has one primary and several specialties that focus on different and sometimes overlapping areas. They are:

General Dentist: A general dentist is your primary care dental provider. This dentist diagnoses, treats, and manages your overall oral health care needs, including gum care, root canals, fillings, crowns, veneers, bridges, and preventive education.

Cosmetic Dentists: These dentists have a goal of improving the aesthetics of the mouth and teeth. They typically combine knowledge from many areas of dentistry and must be familiar with dental implants, dentures, dental crowns, and dental bridges like regular dentists, however, unlike regular dentists, they also deal with porcelain veneers, teeth straightening, restorative dentistry, bonding techniques, teeth whitening, teeth bleaching both surgically and cosmetically.

Prosthodontic Dentists: Prosthodontists create artificial teeth, such as dentures, individual tooth implants and dental bridges of several artificial teeth. They are also called on after accidents and illnesses that call for the need of prosthetics for the mouth. They may work with patients and fit the artificial teeth themselves or they may fulfill orders placed by general dentists.

Maxillofacial Dentists: If you have a bad infection that is not responding to regular treatments by your general dentist, you may need to see a Maxillofacial dentist. These dentists are surgeons who have a unique set of knowledge and skills that enables them to diagnose and treat a number of disparities of the head and neck region. They are surgically trained in a hospital-based residency program alongside medical residents, focusing on the complexity of the anatomical facial structures, specifically the mouth and jaw.

Pediatric Dentists: Pediatric dentists are dedicated to the oral health of children from infancy through the teen years. They have the experience and qualifications to care for a child’s teeth, gums, and mouth throughout the various stages of childhood.

Periodontics Dentists: Is a relatively rare area of dentistry. These dentists specializes in the gums and supportive areas of the teeth. They will be called on when there are serious issues relating to the gums and areas below the teeth line.

Prosthodontics Dentists:

  1. Is the Dentist recognized as one of the best?

Check on-line for any reviews of the dentist or the practice. People are generally happy to report any problems on-line these days. Also, check to see if there are any articles written by or about the dentist, and if the dentist has received any commendations for his/her dentistry. It is always best to aim to hire award winning local dentists in your area.

Once these two areas are established, you should set up and appointment because the only way to ensure that you’ve found the right dentist is by meeting the dentist. Check that the facilities are clean and orderly, and don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as possible. The right dentist will be ready to answer your questions and create a great relationship with you.
